WATER QUALITY

The Salt River is listed on the Wyoming Depart-
ment of Environmental Quality (DEQ) 303(d) list as
threatened water body for contact recreation des-
ignated use because of high fecal coliform.

As a direct result of this listing, the Star Valley
Conservation District sponsored a meeting in Feb-
ruary 2003 for landowners and managers who own/operate land along the Salt River and/or its
tributaries. From the attendees at this meeting the
Salt River Watershed Plan Steering Committee
was formed to give input to the Conservation
District for writing a Watershed Plan of the Salt River.

Professionals were hired to wri te the plan, with input
from the Steering Committee. Meetings were held
on a regular basis for over two years. This Watershed
Plan writing was funded by a Wyoming Department of
Agriculture Grant, and by the Lincoln County Comm-
issioners with in-kind services from private land
owners and managers and government agencies.
After this document was developed and approved
by the Steering Committee, it was made available for
public comment in August 2004. The Salt River Water-
shed Plan was approved by WDEQ in June 2005, and
incorporated into the Lincoln County Comprehensive
Plan in December 2005.
